Swiss Mobile Market Report 2024

Updated: Nov 10

The team at internet-offer.ch has analyzed how the Swiss mobile market is rapidly evolving: the data collected highlights an increase in the competitiveness of mobile plans over the past year. These changes and new market entrants are helping users save on mobile expenses while gaining access to more telecommunications services.

The data collected by internet-offer confirms a decrease in prices and an improvement in the conditions of the tariffs offered by operators, correctly aligning with the mobile usage trends of Swiss subscribers.

Data consumption in Switzerland is growing

The average monthly mobile data consumption per active subscription in the market has nearly tripled over the five-year period between 2018 and 2022, with double-digit growth rates every year. Projecting the growth rate seen between 2021 and 2022 into the following years reveals that the data volume required per active SIM exceeds 22 GB per month. This increase is clearly influenced by the significant rise in data SIM cards issued in the market, which record steady annual growth linked to the expansion of broadband networks and the spread of 5G.

How mobile subscriptions have changed from 2022 to 2024

The price trend for mobile services over the last three years for users with high monthly data volumes shows a strong decline, benefiting consumers who can find various unlimited mobile subscription offers for less than 20 CHF per month.

The situation in 2022 and 2023 is based on data collected by Tech Insights and published on the UFCOM website using OECD methodology, aggregating voluntarily submitted data from some operators. The 2024 data was proactively collected by the internet-offer team, adding more relevant operators.

Here are the tables in reverse chronological order:

Unlimited Mobile Subscriptions in Switzerland Now Offer Roaming

A new trend observed during the summer of 2024 concerns data roaming: among the sample of over 23 operators analyzed in the August-September period, 22 offer an unlimited tariff with at least 1 GB of EU roaming included monthly, and prices below 40 CHF per month. Compared to the same period last year, we see five new entries:

Among traditional mobile network operators (MNOs), Sunrise joins Salt with the launch of the new Sunrise Swiss Travel+ tariff. Spusu enters the Swiss market in August 2024, offering low-cost mobile subscriptions with roaming, as it has done in other markets where it operates.

Galaxus, Digital Republic, and GoMo have added to their unlimited mobile tariffs in Switzerland the possibility to use 1, 2, and 3 GB in Europe, respectively.

A positive note for Swiss users is the growing number of offers for mobile subscriptions with roaming (at least 1 GB) and unlimited data in Switzerland. An even more positive note comes from the new market minimum price for this type of subscription:

  • Minimum monthly price in 2023: 20 CHF/month

  • Minimum monthly price in 2024: 14.95 CHF/month

  • Delta: -25.25%

Comparing the minimum price of the analyzed package with the lowest tariff from the operator with the highest price, we find a monthly saving of 54.95 CHF, which amounts to 659.40 CHF over a year.
