Writer's picture: internet-offer.chinternet-offer.ch

In this guide, you'll find a list of international dialing codes categorized by region, along with a brief history of how this system was established.

If you're reading this guide, you likely need to make an international call and require the country code to dial before the phone number. Keep reading to find the alphabetically ordered list of codes by continent. Further down, you’ll also find the list organized by numerical zones and some historical context on the development of this classification system.

Before proceeding, keep in mind that international calls can be costly due to roaming charges. We recommend switching to a mobile plan that includes roaming to save money on your calls abroad.

International dialing code areas

As you may have observed from the list of international area codes by continent, the number following the “+” has been assigned with a certain logic of territoriality: neighboring countries share the initial area code and differ by the second or third digit.

Here we give you the zones sorted by the number of international area codes:

  • Zone 1 - North America and part of Central America

  • Zone 2 - Africa, Atlantic Islands and islands in the Indian Ocean

  • Zone 3 - Some Parts of Europe (mainly Southern Europe, Atlantic Europe and Eastern Europe)

  • Zone 4 - Parts of Europe (mainly Central Europe, Scandinavian Peninsula and the United Kingdom)

  • Zone 5 - South America and parts of Central America

  • Zone 6 - Oceania and the South Pacific

  • Zone 7 - Russia, occupied Russian territories and Kazakhstan

  • Zone 8 - East Asia

  • Zone 9 - Middle East, Central and South Asia

Do International Dialing Codes Start with "+" or "00"?

International dialing codes can start with either “+” or “00”, depending on the dialing method used:

  • “+” (plus sign) → This symbol represents the international access code and is used on mobile phones and some landline systems. Example: +41 for Switzerland.

  • “00” (double zero) → This is the standard prefix for international calls in many countries, particularly in Europe. Example: 0041 for Switzerland.

Both formats are valid, but the “+” symbol is more universal, as it automatically adapts to the required international prefix in the country of origin.

When Were International Dialing Codes Introduced?

International dialing codes were introduced as part of the ITU E.164 Numbering Plan, developed in the 1960s.

The system was practically implemented in 1964 with the introduction of the country code system, assigning each country a unique numerical identifier for international calls. Before this, international calls were manually routed by telephone operators.

Since then, the system has been updated multiple times to accommodate the growth of telecommunications and mobile networks.
