Swisscom's commitment is to expand signal coverage to bring a fast connection to every corner of the country, improving Switzerland's competitiveness in the European landscape. For this reason, Swisscom invests approximately 1.7 million francs annually to innovate the digital infrastructure and increase signal speed and coverage.

Which network does Swisscom use?

Swisscom already ensures 99% 5G network coverage in the country and 81% coverage with the even faster 5G+ technology. This service is managed entirely sustainably, and since 2010, 100% of the electricity used by Swisscom comes from renewable sources such as hydroelectric plants or solar panels. For this sustainable use of the network and other initiatives, Swisscom has been awarded as the most sustainable telecommunications company in the world.

Key milestones in the history of the Swisscom network include:

  • 2002: Swisscom launches the GPRS mobile network, enabling the use of the mobile connection for downloading data and emails up to 48 kbps.

  • 2005: Swisscom launches the EDGE mobile network, increasing the maximum internet speed to 256 kbps.

  • 2012: Swisscom launches the fourth-generation mobile network in Switzerland with a maximum speed of 150 Mbps as the first operator.

  • 2014: LTE Advanced technology debuts in Switzerland, doubling the available speed.

  • 2019: The Swisscom 5G network is activated in Switzerland for the first time with a maximum speed of up to 1 Gbps.

  • 2021: After 25 years of reliable service, the second-generation network is shut down to increase the capacity of new generation antennas.

  • 2022: The Swisscom 5G mobile network reaches 99% of the population just two years after its debut, and Swisscom's 5G+ is launched with speeds of up to 2 Gbps.

In recent years, the Swisscom mobile network has won many awards for the quality of its mobile network. To mention the most recent ones, Swisscom was recognized as the best mobile network and best 5G network of 2024 by Connect and as the best network, best 5G network, and best network on trains by CHIP.

Swisscom 5G Coverage

In the future, Swisscom plans to further expand its 5G network to cover the entire population, as is already the case with older generation networks.

The maximum 5G download speed expected is 10 Gbps, which will provide performance similar to Swisscom's fiber optic network. Additionally, the number of users connected to a single cell tower will exponentially increase from 400 to 40,000. This way, Swisscom will ensure uninterrupted service even with a high number of active users, such as during a concert or when a train passes by.
