How to read this 2G mobile coverage map?
The map above allows you to check the number of operators providing a 2G connectivity service.
Areas covered by the mobile network are displayed in a 100x100-meter grid.
The color scale used goes up to green, indicating the highest coverage percentage.
Areas with no color indicate the absence of 2G antennas (GSM / EDGE) installed by mobile network operators.
Who operates the 2G mobile network in Switzerland?
In Switzerland, the 2G mobile network is being phased out. Only one operator (Sunrise) is still providing this communication service, mainly to manage certain data subscriptions associated with M2M or IoT devices.
By the end of 2025, the 2G shutdown will be completed, aligning Sunrise with Salt and Swisscom, which have already deactivated this network.
Difference between EDGE, GSM, and other 2G technologies
When we talk about 2G, we refer to various technologies that differ in connection performance and technological advancement.
Here is the list of existing 2G technologies:
GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) → The basic 2G standard, used for calls and SMS, with data speeds up to 9.6–14.4 Kbps.
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) → An evolution of GSM, with speeds up to 171 Kbps, the first technology to support mobile internet.
EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) → An advanced version of GPRS, with speeds up to 384 Kbps, considered 2.75G due to improved data transmission.
GPRS and EDGE made web browsing possible on 2G networks, but today they are obsolete compared to 4G and 5G.
What are the pros and cons of a 2G mobile connection?
The following table summarizes the main pros and cons of a 2G connection:
Pros | Cons |
Wide coverage, especially in rural areas | Very low speeds, up to 384 Kbps with EDGE |
Low energy consumption, ideal for IoT and M2M devices | High latency, unsuitable for streaming and modern browsing |
Universal compatibility, supported by almost all phones (even older models) | Limited call and data services, lower audio quality compared to VoLTE |
